World Cup – Round of 16 – JAP vs CRO / BRA vs KOR

Japan and Croatia went to extra time, while Brazil finally brought their football boots to the tournament. Day 3 of the Round of 16 has ended, here’s what happened!

Croatia went through on penalties. It was a close and hard fought match, with two equal teams battling through 120 minutes. Croatia had a bit more possession, a bit more shots(same amount of shots on target though) and a slightly better xG, 1.45 compared to Japan’s 1.19.

Japan opened the scoring by Maeda in the 43th minute, after a corner kick, which somehow brought the ball to his feet. The Asians finished the first half in advantage, despite Croatia pushing hard, however it wasn’t late into the second half when Perisic equalised, after a brilliant header. Nice Lovren assist too. Both teams had their chances, however no goal was score under the penalties. Japan missed 3(Livakovic technically saved them), while Croatia missed only one, thus ending the Nippons run at the tournament.

Croatia are through to the Quarter Finals once more and their adversaries are going to be decided in today’s other match. Japan are going home after a heroic group stage, which saw them eliminate Germany and beat Spain.

Brazil were the better side, but they did manage to resolve the match in the first half and got their foot off the throttle in the second half. Brazil had an xG of 3.56 at the end of the match, while South Korea had sub 0.5.

Vinicius Jr opened the scoring early on, after a Raphinha assist. Brazil got a penalty 3 minutes later, which was converted by Neymar. Richarlison scored one of the best goals of the tournament in the 29th minute after a true joga bonito moment. Paqueta added the 4th after a Vini jr assist. Korea managed to pull one back in the second half, with a very nice goal from Paik.

Brazil are through to the Quarter FInals, they are going to face Croatia. South Korea are out.
