World Cup Qatar 2022 – Day 4

Day 4 of the World Cup: we got another surprise result, a demolishing and some damn good football. Here is our daily update of the World Cup’s 4th day!

Morocco0Croatia0
Group F

Subs
Morocco: Y. Attiat-Allal, 60′, Ez Abde, 65′, A. Hamdallah, 81′, A. Sabiri, 81′
Croatia: M. Pasalic, 46′, M. Livaja, 71′, L. Majer, 79′, M. Orsic, 90′

The day began with a goalless draw, as somewhat surprisingly, Morocco stopped Croatia from getting the 3 points. It was by all accounts a balanced game as Modric and co dominated possession, however Morocco was very dangerous in some parts of the game. Group F looks set to become a joy to watch, with 4 teams who are relatively close in quality.

Germany1Japan2
Group E
I. Gundogan 33′R. Doan 75′
T. Asano 83′

Subs
Germany: L. Goretzka, 67′, J. Hofmann, 67′, N. Fullkrug, 79′, M. Gotze, 79′, Y. Moukoko, 90′
Japan: T. Tomiyasu, 46′, K. Mitoma, 57′, T. Asano, 57′, R. Doan, 71′, T. Minamino, 75′

Japan shocks Germany in yet another surprise at the World Cup! Even though Germany opened scoring and they were looking like the more dangerous team, Japan showed a lot of spirit and managed to get back into the game, only to deliver the final blow in the 83th minute. With an xG of more than 3, Flick will be left wondering how his team managed to lose this one. Germany is now forced to get a result against a dominant Spain.

Spain7Costa Rica0
Group E
D. Olmo 11′
M. Asensio 21′
F. Torres 31′, 54′
Gavi 74′
C. Soler 90′
A. Morata 90′

Subs
Spain: A. Morata, 57′, C. Soler, 57′, A. Balde, 64′, Koke, 64′, N. Williams, 69′
Costa Rica: K. Waston, 46′, A. Zamora, 61′, B. Ruiz, 61′, B. Aguilera, 72′, R. Matarrita, 82′

To be honest there is not a lot to say about this game, Spain dominated Costa Rica and came away as clear and undisputed victors. The midfield borrowed from Barcelona did not set a foot wrong, the attacking trio all got on the scoresheet and the defense didn’t have a lot to do. Spain is looking like one of the best teams at the tournament, if not the best. Will be interesting to see how far they go.

Belgium1Canada0
Group F
M. Batshuayi 44′

Subs
Belgium: A. Onana, 46′, T. Meunier, 46′, L. Trossard, 62′, L. Openda, 78′
Canada: C. Larin, 58′, I. Kone, 58′, S. Adekugbe, 74′, J. Osorio, 81′, L. Millar, 81′

Canada looked like the better side in the first half and Bayern’s Alphonso Davies even missed a penalty, with some dubious ref decisions going to other way as well. Belgium did manage to open the scoring at the end of the half though, thanks to Fenerbahce’s Batshuayi. The second half didn’t bring a lot of action, neither team managed to create clear cut chances. Belgium takes the 3 points, but Group F is sure to bring a lot of excitement for the remainder of the group stage!
