World Cup Qatar 2022 – Group C & D

Group C and D are also finished! Australia goes through, Argentina survives initial scare to face them in the Round of 16 and yellow cards almost decide which team goes through. Let’s see what happened today at the World Cup!

Group D

Results

Tunisia1France0
W. Khazri 58′

Subs
Tunisia: I. Jebali 60′, G. Chaaleli 74′, A. Abdi 83′
France: K. Mbappe 63′, A. Rabiot 63′, W. Saliba 63′, A. Griezmann 73′, O. Dembele 79′

France were virtually guarenteed to finish first in the group, so Didier Deschamps allowed himself to make some experiments. Experiments such as using Real Madrid’s young midfielder, Camavinga as a Left Back. It was a relatively even match, with France controlling possession and having more shots, but nothing to write home about. Tunisia had an xG of 0.6, compared to France’s 0.74. Tunisia struck in the 58th minute to give them the win, but it wasn’t enough for them to go through.

Australia1Denmark0
M. Leckie 60′

Subs
Australia: K. Baccus 46′, B. Wright 74′, J. Maclaren 82′, A. Hrustic 89′
Denmark: A. Bah 46′, K. Dolberg 59′, M. Damsgaard 59′, A. Cornelius 69′, R. Skov 69′

Some considered Denmark to be one of the dark horses of the tournament, but it wasn’t meant to be for the Northerners. Even though Denmark controlled the possession and had a slightly higher xG, it was the Aussies who’ve scored, thanks to a well taken Leckie goal. The Melbourne FC winger secured the win for his national team and Australia are going to the Round of 16. Denmark out, huge disappointment for Eriksen and co!

Argentina absolutely dominated the match. They got a penalty in the first half, which was saved by Juventus’ GK, Szczęsny, however Argentina opened the scoring right after the start of the second half. Poland just never looked like a team capable of scoring. Argentina added a second, thanks to Alvarez. Poland does manage to go through though, thanks to a better goal difference than Mexico’s.

Saudi Arabia1Mexico2
S. Al Dawsari 90′H. Martin 47′
L. Chavez 52′

Mexico: U. Antuna 46′, C. Rodriguez 77′, R. Jimenez 77′, K. Alvarez 86′, R. Funes Mori 86′

Mexico finally found their form, while Saudi Arabia finally lost theirs! After heroic performances in the first 2 games, KSA didn’t manage to get into the game versus underperforming Mexico. In this match, Mexico went 2-0 up, however Saudi Arabia scored in injury time to dismiss Mexico’s claim of going through. Also Mexico’s second goal is a true gem!

Argentina and Poland are through, so no big surprises here! It is wild that the number of yellow cards was almost the deciding factor between Poland and Mexico. Saudi’s late goal did mean that Poland had the better goal difference though. Argentina to play versus Australia, while will face France in the Round of 16.
