Matchday Roundup – 12.09.2022

With no Premier League this weekend, due to Queen Elisabeth’s death, this week’s Matchday Roundup is going to be a bit shorter than usual. Let’s see what happened in the Spanish, German, Italian and French leagues over the weekend!

Real Madrid and Barcelona continued their winning streaks, as Barca beat Cadiz 4-0. While Real had an early scare against Mallorca, just for them to come back and win 4-1. Valverde, Vini Jr, Rodrygo and Rudiger were all on the scoresheet. Early strugglers Sevilla also won their first match, as they’ve beaten Espanyol 3-2. Atleti banged 4 as well, as they drowned Celta, while in the derby of the round, Real Betis versus Villareal ended with an Andalusian victory, 1-0. Getafe are starting their comeback, as they beat La Real 2-1.

Standings

Real Madrid are still the only team from the top 5 leagues, who have a perfect start, 15 points from 5 games. This can change next week though, as they travel across the city to face Atletico at the Metropolitano. Also their goal difference is second to Barcelona’s, who have scored 15 and conceded only 1. Lewandowski also leads the Top Goalscorers table, with 6 goals, one more than Iago Aspas. Cadiz are still on 0 points, but it’s looking gloomier for Elche as well, with 1 point.

For the first time in possibly an eternity, Bayern fails to win their last 3 matches. Let’s not get carried away, they are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga, however their last 3 matches ended in draws. Might not be the best time for them to face Barcelona on Tuesday in the Champions League. In the derby of the round, RB Leipzig, who have presented their new manager, Marco Rose shocked Dortmund, winning 3-0. Former leaders, Freiburg drew against Gladbach, just for Union Berlin to beat Koln 1-0 and move to 1st place. Leverkusen’s poor run continues, as they drew with Hertha, 1-1.

Standings

What a sight to behold! Union Berlin are first, followed by none other than Freiburg. Bayern are 3rd, but they are still in striking distance, only 2 points off 1st place. Hoffenheim climbs to 4th, while Dortmund sinks to 5th. RB Leipzig are still mid table, however they are still better off than Leverkusen, who are still in the relegation zone. Bochum are still with 0 points.

Serie A’s round is incomplete, as Roma will face Empoli today, on the 12th of September. Napoli opened the round with a narrow win over Spezia. Former leaders, Atalanta only managed a 1-1 draw against Cremonese, while Milan and Inter both managed to win their games. Juventus seems not to be back to winning ways, as they’ve only managed to get a point against Salernitana at home.

Standings

The race in Italy is really heating up, as Napoli, Atalanta and Milan are all on 14 points, followed by surprise team, Udinese on 13. Inter are also close by and Roma can also climb to 13, with a win tonight. Lazio and Juve are on 11 and 10 respectively. At the back of the table, Monza finally got their first points, while Sampdoria just can’t catch a break and they are still on only 2 points. Arnautovic is the current top scorer. Maybe Man Utd should have went for him?

As usual, all eyes on PSG and they have won their game against Stade Brestois, 1-0, Neymar on the score sheet again. Lens beat Troyes to continue their fight for top 4, while Marseille manage to beat Lille 2-1. AS Monaco are starting to gain some form of momentum, after defeating Lyon 2-1. Note, Lyon played midweek against Lorient to play their game in hand. They lost that game too.

Standings

It seemed last week that Lyon would be strong enough to keep themselves close to PSG, but with 2 losses in just as many games, seems that dream is dead. Marseille however have won their last 5 games and they are on level of points of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe’s PSG. Lens are Lorient are looking impressive at 3rd and 4th, while AS Monaco are now 7th. Ajaccio are last, with 1 point. Angers, Brest and Strasbourg are all on 5 points, all in the relegation zone.

Tune in next week for another Matchday Roundup, before the international break!
