Champions League – Matchday 3 Roundup

The Champions League is back this week and it was a round to remember. Out of 4 Spanish teams, 3 lost their games, Napoli are unstoppable, a certain Belgian club is dominating it’s group, while the French and the Portuguese league are fighting for the 5th spot in the coefficients on more than one front. Group A

After their defeat in the first round, Liverpool are back on track with their second win in a row, this time versus Rangers, 2-0 at Anfield, to put them second in the group. Rangers are last and with 0 points.

Napoli faced Ajax in the Amsterdam Arena and managed to absolutely dominate their Dutch opponents. Spalletti’s boys, helped by a Raspadori double, are looking like one of the strongest teams in Europe right now.

Brugge’s Champions League dream continues. After beating both Porto and Leverkusen, they have beaten Atletico as well. No one would have expected them to lead their group before the start of the season, yet here they are with 9 points.

In the other match of the group, Porto beat Leverkusen, in Gerardo Seoane’s last game for the club. He is being replaced by former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern midfielder, Xabi. Leverkusen, Porto and Atletico are all on 3 points.

Inter took a giant leap towards securing their place in the last 16, as they’ve beaten Barcelona at home, 1-0. In a game full of questionable refereeing decisions, it was Hakan Calhanoglu’s goal before the break to seal the deal for the Italian side. The return leg will most likely be a spicy one.

In the other match of the group, Bayern easily beat Viktoria Plzen, with Sane and Mane being in excellent form.


Group D

Group D didn’t disappoint once more, even though Eintracht and Spurs played to a blank draw, 0-0.

In the other match of the group, Marseille had 0 points before this match, while Sprting CP had 6. Basically last placed OM managed to obliterate first placed Sporting CP, 4 to 1. All 4 teams have a chance of going through, we can surely expect a lot of interesting results from this group.


Group E

The first match of the group, Chelsea versus Milan was way more one sided than people would have hoped. With Reece James being in top form and Aubameyang on the scoresheet, Chelsea beat AC Milan 3-1. This is Chelsea’s first win and puts them level on points with Milan.

In the other match, we see surprise package, RB Salzburg beat Dinamo Zagreb, 1-0. This puts RB top of their group, but the difference between first and last place is only 2 points. Tense group.


Group F

Group F is going almost exactly like people anticipated, Real Madrid is dominating it, while the other teams are trading blows for second place. Real beat Shakhtar 2-1, in a very entertaining game and can sit back and relax with 9 points in 3 games.

In the other match of the group, RB Leipzig got their first points of the UCL season, as they beat Celtic 3-1 at the Red Bull Arena, thanks to an Andre Silva double.


Group G

Man City are in a similar situation as Real Madrid, as they are absolutely dominating their group, with 9 points out of 9 possible. Their prey this time around were FC Kobenhavn, who they have dispossed of, 5-0. Haaland with another double.

Another horrible result for Lopetegui and Sevilla, as they lost in Spain against Borussia Dortmund, 4-1. Jude Bellingham had a great performance once more, as he captained Dortmund and scored one of the goals.


Group H

Before this round, both PSG and Benfica were on 6 points. It was a relatively even match and it ended up with an inconclusive result regarding group supremacy, as the teams drew 1-1. Messi scored for PSG.

In the other match of the group, Juventus finally got their first points as they beat Maccabi 3-1, with a Rabiot double and a Vlahovic goal. Benfica and PSG are favorites for going through, however Juventus will look to put up a fight.
