Champions League – Matchday 4 Roundup

The 4th round of the Champions League has been played and things are getting interesting in all eight groups. It seems a lot of big teams will leave the competition early this year. Let’s see the standings and the results of this matchday!

Group A

12/10/22Rangers1Liverpool7
12/10/22Napoli4Ajax2

Rangers’ nightmare continues, as they are heavily beaten by Liverpool, thanks to a Mo Salah hat-trick. The Scottish side are still on 0 points, with having very little chance of making it through to the Europa League. Liverpool can still finish first, but Napoli are favorites.

One of the strongest teams in Europe right now, Napoli, continue their march, as they beat Ajax once again, this time at the Diego Maradona. All 3 Napoli attackers were on the scoresheet and Raspadori seems to be the preferred option for the Striker position at the moment. Ajax are set to go to Europa League.

Group B

12/10/22Atlético Madrid0Club Brugge0
12/10/22Bayer 04 Leverkusen0FC Porto3

Another thing we didn’t think we will say at the beginning of the season: 4 games in and Club Brugge are still unbeaten in the Champions League. With a 0-0 against Atletico, they are officially qualified to the round of 16! Remains to be seen whether they can keep their first position, but they are favorites for sure. Atletico can still fight for 2nd place.

In the other game of the round, Porto beat Bayer Leverkusen, 3-0, as Xabi Alonso’s purple patch lasted exactly one game. The Germans still have a chance of capturing 3rd place, while Porto are looking at securing their place in the first KO round of the UCL next round.

Group C

12/10/22Barcelona3Inter3
12/10/22Viktoria Plzeň2Bayern München4

The most expected game of the matchday, Barcelona versus Inter ended in a stalemate, 3-3. Inter were looking like they were going through, with only a few minutes left, but Lewandowski brought Barca’s chances back in the 92nd. Still, Inter are through if they beat Viktoria Plzen in the next round.

In the second match of the round, Viktoria Plzen suffered another loss, as Bayern won the match 4-2, with a Goretzka double. Viktoria are almost mathematically out, while Bayern needs another point to secure first place.

Group D

12/10/22Tottenham Hotspur3Eintracht Frankfurt2
12/10/22Sporting CP0Olympique de Marseille2

Group D just getting more and more interesting, as Tottenham beat Eintracht Frankfurt to move to first place, however they are far from qualified with just 7 points after 4 games. Frankfurt are last with 4, however they could technically even win the group.

After winning their first two matches, Sporting has now lost their last two, being beaten by Marseille at home. Both teams are now on 6 points, one behind Tottenham and only 2 in front of Frankfurt. Still very exciting four matches to come out from this group.

Group E

11/10/22Milan0Chelsea2
11/10/22GNK Dinamo Zagreb1Red Bull Salzburg1

The derby of the round in Group E, Milan versus Chelsea ended with another win for the London based side. Milan got an early red card, which changed the whole game. Chelsea are now first, with 7 points, while Milan still has all to fight for, even though they are last with four points.

Dinamo Zagreb faced Red Bull Salzburg in the other match of the round. It ended 1-1, giving both teams chances to advance. RB are currently 2nd, with only one point off Chelsea.

Group F

11/10/22Shakhtar Donetsk1Real Madrid1
11/10/22Celtic0RB Leipzig2

Real Madrid dropped their first points in this season’s Champions League group stage, as they have only managed a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar in Poland. A late Rudiger equalizer(from a brilliant Kroos pass) was needed for Ancelotti’s side and the German injured himself in the process, making him a doubt for the Clasico in the weekend.

Even though RB Leipzig lost their first 2 games of the campaign, they have bounced back and beat Celtic two times. They are now on 6 points, being in pole position to qualify together with Real Madrid. It’s not looking good for Celtic, as they are last, with only 1 point.

Group G

11/10/22FC København0Manchester City0
11/10/22Borussia Dortmund1Sevilla1

Similar to Real Madrid, Man City have also dropped their first points in the UCL this season. With several key players rested, the Citizens only managed to draw against FC Kobenhavn. The match ended 0-0, however City all but secured their first place in the group.

Dortmund faced Sevilla, for the Spanish team’s first UCL game with Sampaoli as manager. The match ended 1-1 and Sevilla produced some decent football this time around. It seems to be too little, too late though, as they are on 2 points after 4 games, 5 off second placed Dortmund.

Group H

11/10/22Paris Saint-Germain1SL Benfica1
11/10/22Maccabi Haifa2Juventus0

Yet another draw between PSG and Benfica, as the two group leaders fail to decide the better team between the pair. Some interesting news surfaced regarding Mbappe in recent days, however the French forward did score PSG’s goal this match.

Juventus suffers another shock defeat, as they were beaten in Israel, 2-0 by Maccabi Haifa. By all practical means, this results in Juventus having to fight with Maccabi for the Europa League spot, while PSG and Benfica are as good as through.
